Cabling firm Virgin Media is upgrading the broadband connections of 2.6 million of its customers to 10Mbps.
The new network equipment will be rolled out at no extra cost to customers and will boost their connection speed by around 8Mbps from the current level of 2Mbps.
Virgin Media's decision to boost the offering to its slowest-speed broadband customers follows the upgrade of its 4Mbps connections to 10Mbps last year.
The move will give broadband users a choice of either 10, 20 or 50Mbps.
"Our entry-level broadband product is now twice the speed of comparable services and, with our new 10-20-50 range, we clearly offer the highest quality broadband service in the UK," said Neil Berkett, the company's chief executive.
Meanwhile, the UK has failed to make it into the top 20 countries offering ultra-fast broadband down fibre optic cables falling behind Estonia, Latvia and Andora.
However, the figures, compiled by the Fibre-to-the-Home Council, do not include high-speed broadband delivered down standard structure cabling.
