Rural broadband boost demanded by MSP - Cable

Rural broadband boost demanded by MSP - Cable A Scottish MSP has called on the country's government to boost rural broadband with £15 million worth of support.

Peter Peacock, who is MSP for the Highlands and Islands, said that part of the £40 million set aside for technological developments north of the border should be used to boost connectivity in rural communities – particularly in Inverness.

He claimed that the extra funding would allow rural communities to benefit from the same internet connection speeds that city dwellers in Scotland enjoy.

Mr Peacock said: "It is not every day a minister gets a windfall of such a huge amount of cash and it is cash that can only be spent in rural areas, nowhere else."

Earlier this year, the i3 Group announced plans to install fibre optic cable network equipment in the Scottish town of Dundee.

The company said it was investing £30 million in the project and the development would be the largest home network of its kind in the country, connecting more than 70,000 houses.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19482026-ADNFCR
