Bosses at BT have insisted the rollout of its new fibre cables will be significantly quicker - thanks to a "super spade".
The tool has the ability to reduce the amount of time it takes to install new super-fast internet cables from one week to just two days.
Before the utensil was given to engineers, BT was forced to wait for specialist contractors to remove hard objects before they could lay the cables, but the new spade is able to smash through concrete.
"The shovel is extra sharp, so our engineers can use it to cut through tarmac and remove blockages more easily during a fibre installation," a BT spokesperson was quoted by PC Pro as saying.
Workers could also save plenty of time by placing fibre cabinets on a plastic plinth, rather than a concrete one.
The network provider revealed last week it was speeding up the rollout of its new fibre cables as part of its £300 million investment. It is now expected to be completed in 2014 - one year earlier than expected.
