VoIP security is paramount - Telephone

VoIP security is paramount - TelephoneSecurity should be the first consideration when companies embark on the implementation of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) over a local area network.

According to the executive vice-president of network equipment manufacturer Phybridge Steven Fair, security should be a top priority when putting voice capabilities into an existing local area network.

Speaking at the IT360 conference in Toronto, Mr Fair said: "When you're talking to your provider, ask them 'How am I going to protect myself from someone hacking in and listening to senior executives talking on the phone?'"

He claimed that VoIP installations can be protracted and costly as service providers figure out which holes need plugging to prevent hackers exploiting them.

Mr Fair added that hacking software is readily available for download from the internet so firms need to be wary.

According to a new report published by an alliance of US internet security experts, cyber crime rose by almost a third in 2008.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19122264-ADNFCR
