VoIP over LAN presents challenges - Telephone

VoIP over LAN presents challenges - TelephoneVoIP has revolutionised business communications but running it over a local area network (LAN) may present a range of deployment challenges, it has been claimed.

According to the senior web editor of TMCnet Patrick Barnard, most companies LANs are "woefully inadequate" when it comes to supporting VoIP traffic.

He said: "Although a company network may seem to have enough capacity, when looking at average daily traffic, one has to bear in mind that multimedia applications like VoIP are extremely bandwidth intensive."

Mr Barnard added that low bandwidths can result in the service being of such a low quality that it is practically unusable and a firm's IT workers will have to continually tweak the network to ensure that the data and voice balance is correct.

According to Mobile-Phones.co.uk, the widespread use of mobile VoIP could have a major impact on both the future of the phone operator and IT sectors in the UK.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19154305-ADNFCR
