Wind to power Google server racks - Data and Server Racks

Wind to power Google server racks - Data and Server RacksGoogle has announced that it will source a large proportion of its power from wind-generated energy.

As one of the biggest providers of internet and cloud-based services in the world, the company consumes vast quantities of power to keep its server racks going in its network of data centres.

In its effort to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable environmental solutions, the firm has confirmed that, from the end of this month, it will begin purchasing clean energy from 114 megawatts of wind generation at the NextEra Energy Resources Story County II facility in Iowa.

Urs Hoelzle, senior vice president of operations at Google, said: "We depend upon large quantities of electricity to power Google services and want to make large actions to support renewable energy.

"As we continue operating with the most energy-efficient data centres and working to be carbon neutral, we're happy to also be directly purchasing energy from renewable resources."

Google has previously confirmed that it is testing fuel cell power in some of its data centres.
