Signs that data centre hardware such as server racks could soon be run using direct current (DC) could mean that solar panels are used more and more to power the facilities, an expert has asserted.
Roger Schmidt, IBM fellow and its chief engineer for data centre energy efficiency, explained that solar power could be used to cool establishments, but noted that at the moment this is unusual because a steady supply of power is needed, reports Gigaom.com.
However, he noted: "If the move is toward DC power in a data center, the solar array provides a huge opportunity because it provides DC already."
He revealed that IBM wants to link solar arrays directly to its DC power server, as this could eliminate some of the conversion losses.
IBM has already built a 50kW solar array at one of its labs in Bangalore, which it uses to power its servers.
Earlier this month, power and automation developer ABB and data centre hardware provider IO announced that they had developed a new module powered by direct current.
