Off-site server racks 'save on office space' - Data and Server racks

Off-site server racks 'save on office space' - Data and Server racksBusinesses have the opportunity to scale back their physical IT infrastructure by working with a cloud computing provider, it has been claimed.

According to Dr Mick Grierson, computing lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, the advent of hosted services means companies no longer need to support huge server rooms in their own offices.

Cloud computing enables them to scale back their physical IT infrastructure, he explained, since clients' IT is powered by remotely hosted servers.

Rather than being located in the office, they are securely kept and managed off-site by a third-party specialist - potentially in intelligent server cabinet solutions such as wall mounted cabinets.

Dr Grierson said businesses can simply hire a rack which can sit at a server farm operated by the cloud vendor.

"It just sits there and you don't ever have to see it. You can just rent a server and it'll feed you any applications you wanted - for a few pounds a month," he added.

Earlier this month, EuroCloud vice-president Phil Wainewright explained that cloud computing can help reduce business costs by outsourcing responsibility for investing in IT.
