Major data centre investment for UK charity - Data and Server Racks

Major data centre investment for UK charity - Data and Server RacksA leading UK charity has made a significant data centre investment in order to deliver greater computing power.

According to Computing.co.uk, the increasingly data-centric nature of Cancer Research UK's requires greater processing power in its centralised computer cluster.

The number of processing cores has increased from 500 to 13,000, and as such, the charity is looking to double the size of its data centre.

With Cancer Research aiming to increase the size from 100 to 200 square metres, there could be more room for wall mounted cabinets and intelligent server rack solutions.

Peter MacCallum, head of IT and scientific computing at Cancer Research UK, explained that the charity has had to create extra storage serve heads and extra fibre channel storage to accommodate the new processing system.

According to analyst firm Gartner, IT managers are beginning to view the data centre more holistically - taking a more strategic approach to technology procurement and deployment.
