Hewlett Packard (HP) is trying to find out if data centres can be made to be sustainable in the future.
The company's HP Labs aims to see if, rather than consuming more and more energy, data centres could be used to manage a building or even an entire city's energy consumption.
HP claims this could end up paying for the cost of running an IT system many times over.
According to HP, there are five areas of sustainability for modern IT systems including energy savings, resiliency, increased efficiency, computer air-conditioning consolidation and flexibility.
HP states that cost savings can be made by simply increasing the temperature at which server racks and server cabinets can operate at.
One of the main areas focussed on by the company's scientists is management - in real time - of energy usage.
Meanwhile, HP's next-generation workstations will offer huge performance and productivity improvements over previous models.
