Server room monitoring may be an important part of checking the data centre's cooling efficiency.
According to RACplus.com, more innovative designs for cooling systems are coming to light as businesses attempt to cut their carbon emissions.
A report by the EU recently forecast that server energy consumption is set to stand at 23.5 trillion watt hours at the end of 2011, a significant increase from the 14.7 trillion watt hours recorded in 2006.
Ecocooling managing director Alan Beresford told the news source: "The figures for consumption are huge - for example, a recently opened data centre in Swansea consumes 90MW an hour."
He noted that the government's Carbon Reduction Commitment has been brought in to encourage firms to cut their emissions and improve their energy efficiency.
"Although it's currently limited to organisations that consumed more than 6,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year of half hourly metered electricity during 2008, it wouldn't surprise me if that figure is lowered in the future, forcing people to have a look at data centre energy consumption," Mr Beresford added.
