An increasing number of companies are choosing to build taller data racks to maximise capacity and minimise costs, it has been reported.
Writing for Data Center Knowledge, Rich Miller says that nine-foot racks, rather than the traditional seven-foot variety, are starting to appear in some data centres.
Hossein Fateh, president and chief executive office of DuPont Fabros Technology, a company that develops and operates wholesale data centres, believes that customers are attuned to the possibilities.
He said: "You can build vertically as well as horizontally, and when you build your rack higher [customers] dont have to pay extra for it.
"To be more efficient, they will build a nine foot rack. We just went through the exercise with one customer who hadn't done it before."
As Miller notes, however, the headache of cooling, already a massive problem, is made worse with the expanded capacity within the same room and keeping cool air distributed evenly can become tricky.
Data centre cooling has been in the news recently because of the innovative methods many organisations are using. Among the recent solutions has been to use to use wind or seawater.
