Spring cleaning data centres could save money - Data and Server Racks

Spring cleaning data centres could save money - Data and Server Racks Spring cleaning a data centre could drastically reduce the cost of its operation, it has been claimed.

According to Steve Pinder, GlassHouse Technologies' principle consultant, legacy equipment is quickly being replaced by faster, smaller servers and storage arrays.

However, he warned IT managers to be wary of outmoded equipment not being decommissioned – which can lead to data centres becoming cluttered, reducing their energy efficiency.

Some server racks and server cabinets are left around 15 per cent full due to incorrect labelling or a lack of time to dispose of old hardware.

He said: "After a while administrators forget that a particular item is earmarked for decommission altogether.

"They may be unable to remember whether it was blade number 12 or 13 that was to be removed."

However, Carla Arend, programme manager of European infrastructure software at IT industry analyst IDC, said that increasing data storage efficiency and cramming server racks with devices is not always the best way to increase energy efficiency.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19227950-ADNFCR
