Simple changes to data centre infrastructure can result in better energy efficiency and substantial cost cuttings, it has been claimed.
According to the Storage Networking Industry Association's European chairman Juergen Arnold, even if IT budgets are tight, a lot can be done to make data centres greener and many improvements will save money in the long run.
Mr Arnold claimed that IT firms should make an effort to sort out their structure cabling, put blanking panels in server racks and server cabinets to improve air flow and ensure lights are turned off when they are not needed.
He added: "To change it doesn't cost any money, and it might take you half a day to sort it out."
Any business wanting to make further improvements to their data centre should consult the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres, Mr Arnold stated.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that supermarket chain Tesco was using a flywheel to protect against power outages at its data centre.
