Server trouble does not have to bring a stop to a company's IT operations, it has been claimed.
According to Processor.com, servers are the "beating hearts of data centres" and perform critical roles in any number of IT environments, but piling work on them from all angles can cause even the most robust systems to falter.
The website recommends strictly documenting all changes to server configuration to avoid problems, as well as housing servers in an actual data centre as opposed to in general IT rooms, which do not necessarily have stringent environmental controls.
Last week it was suggested by speakers at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE) conference that server racks and server cabinets are often overlooked when it comes to cooling issues.
Kishor Khankari, a committee member at the ASHRAE, said: "The vendor tests the single-server airflow. But we stack them, then we put them in a cabinet."
