Server cabinets are 'often overlooked'

Server cabinets are 'often overlooked'Server racks and server cabinets are often an overlooked part of data centre architecture, it has been claimed.

However, according to speakers at the American Society of Heating, Refrigiration and Air-conditioning Engineers conference cabinet choice can have a big impact on airflow around a data centre.

Members of the ASHRAE's technical committee 9.9 claim that poor airflow in a data centre can put unnecessary pressure on air conditioning units in the building.

Either rising hot air from server exhausts mixes with the cold air from air-conditioners, forcing them to work harder to drop the temperature, or cold air can return to the units before it has had a chance to cool anything, creating more work.

According to Hishor Khankari, a member of the committee, data centre architecture professionals should choose which racks are used.

He said: "We cannot just let the IT guys decide what racks should be installed."

In related news, a data centre in San Francisco has won the US's highest green-building rating for its groundbreaking design which uses outside air to cool its servers.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19006613-ADNFCR
