Businesses' security concerns should not be a reason to prevent reusing and recycling end-of-life IT technology because they can easily be addressed.
This is the view of Andrew Boddington, marketing director at Ethical IT, who explained that some companies may be reluctant to hand over their old IT equipment because of data stored in it.
"Depending on who the company is we'll do various levels of data wiping. Yes, it is a concern and that is a concern we address - [with] one bank we even took the granulating machine on to their site. So yes, data security is an issue, but it's an issue we can very easily address," he noted.
Companies considering the sustainability move may be reassured to know that their outdated computer equipment will stay in the country.
"We very much focus on UK recycling because then we've got a pretty good idea that it's not going to end up somewhere in the Third World polluting beaches or whatever," Mr Boddington added.
His comments come after the European parliament called for tighter rules for its member states' growing output of waste electronic and electrical equipment.
