O2 'has consolidated its data centres' - Data Centres and Server Racks

O2 'has consolidated its data centres' - Data Centres and Server RacksA senior official at O2 has revealed that the company's data centre strategy has been to consolidate its facilities, which has enabled it to get rid of three establishments.

It may have reduced its need for data cabinets and RJ45 cables by virtualising and consolidating into a number of strategic sites.

Keith Duncan, head of datacentre design and delivery at Telefonica O2, told Computer Weekly: "With two of the sites, we used the support of third parties and one we did ourselves. It was easier using our own experience as we have a number of people with intimate knowledge of the applications."

He revealed that the firm followed a "top down" consolidation strategy when working out where it could get rid of server racks and other equipment.

The firm has enjoyed such success with these strategies recently that it is looking to close a fourth centre.

This comes after the global industry census by DatacenterDynamics revealed that the average power taken to run a server rack is about 4.05kW.
