IT strategy to save government £1.4bn - Data and Server Racks

IT strategy to save government £1.4bn - Data and Server RacksThe UK government has unveiled its Strategic Implementation Plan, which it claims could help cut outgoings by as much as £1.4 billion.

According to the report, the data centres used by the public sector - which will feature server racks and data cabinets - are "hugely inefficient".

It suggested that the average utilisation of the servers is as low as ten per cent and that by streamlining operations, the number of data centres in operation could be reduced.

Over the next four years, it recommended that the number could be cut by 35 per cent, saving £160million.

Guidelines are being drawn up by the government and it is believed that early next year they will be issued to buyers to encourage them to adopt open source software and select the appropriate hardware and applications.

Earlier this year, Michael Hutchinson, of law firm Mayer Brown, told the Financial Times that larger data centres are more efficient than smaller facilities.
