Sun adds SSD to servers

Sun adds SSD to serversSun Microsystems has announced it is adding solid state disk drives (SSD) to its x64 servers, chip multithreaded servers and blade systems.

According to the firm, the SSD integration will allow users to benefit from up to 70 per cent faster response times and 98 per cent less power consumption that regular spinning hard disk drives.

The SSDs will come with open-source Xolaris ZFS software to allow "virtual pooling of drives behind the file system", according to the developers, which can combine traditional hard drives with SSDs in a storage pool.

Ray Austin, Sun's group manager of storage, said: "Rather than buying new servers or more [hard drives], you can get to the storage requirements" needed for certain applications by adding flash to existing servers."

Dell recently introduced a new range of server racks, its PowerEdge 4220 and PowerEdge 2420, which it claims can increase the reach of storage in small data centres.
