US company Power Assure has launched a new tool that enables data centre operators to manage the energy they consume.
The firm claims its software can help to reduce power usage by up to 60 per cent without compromising services levels.
It works by automatically adjusting the server capacity as it is required, cutting back on wasted energy.
The server room monitoring equipment will switch off cooling fans or lower power levels when computing demand is low.
It is one of many new solutions being offered by manufacturers to help meet the growing need for green data centres.
Data centre technology provider 2bm recently launched a tool called the iMeter which is used at server rack level to give companies an insight into how much energy they are using and at which times.
This will enable them to indentify trends in power consumption and take steps to become more energy efficient.
