New rackable server from ACT - Intelligent Server Cabinet/Rack Solutions

New rackable server from ACT - Intelligent Server Cabinet/Rack SolutionsAdvanced Clustering Technologies (ACT) has unveiled a new server, which can be mounted in server racks and cabinets.

The company claims its Pinnacle 1BX5501 server offers users the chance to have two dual processor servers in a single rack.

It features the Intel Xeon 5500 chip and has two blade units that slide into a single 1U housing.

"With the ever rising cost of rack real-estate... we saw the need to develop a highly dense and affordable dual 1U server solution," said Kyle Sheumaker, president of ACT.

The company adds that Intel's decision to abandon front-side bus architecture in its new Xeon processors allows for better memory performance and management in a data centre setting.

ACT notes that memory can be accessed at rates as high as 25.6GB per second.

Sun Microsystems has extended support for Intel's Xeon 5500 processors in its Solaris operating systems.

The company claims integration of the new chip will provide a boost in performance.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19103141-ADNFCR
