Intel to make savings with data centre consolidation - Intelligent Server Cabinet/Rack Solutions International chip manufacturer Intel is looking to consolidate its data centres, saving itself $250 million (£160 million) over the course of the next eight years.

According to Diane Bryant, Intel's chief information officer, the firm has already reduced the number of data centres it has from 147 to just 70.

The consolidation of the company's network equipment, including server racks and switches, will reduce costs in the areas of cooling, maintenance and support, the firm said.

Bryant claimed that the company's four-year refresh cycle for network equipment is already paying dividends and the firm has save $45 million to date.

Meanwhile, Intel has created a fibre optic lead technology, code named Light Peak, which the company hopes to make available in mainstream devices later next year.

Dadi Perlmutter, the executive vice president of the Intel Architecture Group, said the new technology would put an end to households having a huge tangle of wires connecting their devices together.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19397067-ADNFCR
