Search engine giant Google has applied for a patent for a new data centre server rack cooling technology.
The innovative system uses adjustable piping called 'air wands' that provide highly targeted gusts of cool air to components within server racks and server cabinets.
According to a recent report from Data Center Knowledge, the company already has its own server technology and is looking to create server rack designs that will reduce the company's carbon footprint and cuts its energy costs.
The new technology features two pipes that admit cold air to the top of any given cabinet, the air is then directed along thinner pipes within the data storage rack. The smaller pipes can be adjusted to provide cooling of specific pieces of equipment.
Meanwhile, Google recently issued a number of online video tutorials offering data centre operators hints and tips on how to boost the energy efficiency of their facilities.
The films were recorded at the company's Data Centre Efficiency Summit.
