Intelligent server cabinet solutions are beginning to integrate flash storage, as data centre managers look at ways of improving memory speeds.
According to MarketWatch, the technology has long been incorporated into consumer devices, but was considered too expensive and fragile for use in data centres.
Now, however, its ability to offer faster performance is leading to a rise in demand, with the news provider citing research by Gartner that indicates the market will be worth $994 million (£615 million) by 2015.
"While compute speeds have increased every year, the speed of hard drives has barely budged," the publication noted.
"Hard drives are mechanical devices with moving parts, while flash memory involves a semiconductor that can record and deliver data faster since it is not limited by the speed of a rotating disk head.
Implementing flash storage could help Canadian officials improve the efficiency of their data centres, with the country looking to consolidate and centralise its current server farms into a smaller number of locations.
It is estimated that this could save it hundreds of millions of dollars a year, as well as improving security.
