Facebook opts for Swedish data centre - Data and Server Racks

Facebook opts for Swedish data centre - Data and Server RacksSocial networking giant Facebook has announced that it plans to build a new data centre, complete with server racks, in Sweden.

The location was chosen because the company will be able to take advantage of the naturally cold climate to reduce the amount of power needed to cool units at the facility.

In a statement, the firm suggested that the growth in usage of the website over the last few years contributed to its decisions to develop its own data centres.

According to Facebook, the low ambient temperature in Lulea will enable it to use natural cooling for eight to ten months of the year to prevent hardware from overheating.

Plans are also in place to capture excess heat from the servers to heat office space in the facility in the colder months of the year.

Earlier this month, Google announced that it plans to build a new €75 million (£64 million) data centre in Dublin.
