Dell unveils scalable server platform - Data and Server Racks

Dell unveils scalable server platform - Data and Server RacksDell has unveiled a highly-scalable server with 24 Xeon cores well suited to virtualisation, it has been claimed.

The company states that the PowerEdge R900 is its most powerful server to date, while its 4U chassis supports the complete range of Intel's X7400 Xeon processors.

Mountable in server cabinets & server racks, the server is essentially the same as the company's PowerEdge 6950 AMD server, according to IT Pro.

The front panel, however, has been replaced by two large grills to allow unobstructed air flow.

Cooling is produced by a pair of 12 centimetre hot-swap fans behind the front grills.

"The R900 has plenty to offer as its twenty-four cores will offer a superior virtualization platform," IT Pro states.

Last month Dell teamed up with Cisco to overhaul the company's network equipment, which will see Dell introduce Cisco switches into its PowerEdge and EqualLogic server hardware.

Dell claimed the partnership would allow companies to simplify their data centre infrastructure and reduce the amount of RJ45 cables needed.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19032810-ADNFCR
