Data centres will eventually be driven by software running on top of commoditised servers, according to an expert in the sector.
Raghu Rahuram, senior vice-president of cloud infrastructure and management for VMware, said at VMworld Europe 2011 that virtualisation is changing data centre design.
He claimed that administrators in charge of server racks are likely to start being measured on the number of virtual machines they produce, reports Cloud Pro.
The expert suggested that processing power could be complemented by virtualising data centre equipment.
"Using virtualised servers, if there's a failure then we can use software to switch servers," he said, adding that this will reduce the need to have staff on-hand 24 hours a day.
Earlier this month, Google announced that in the second quarter of the year, its capital expenditure, which includes hardware for its data centres, fell from $917 million (£572 million) to $680 million quarter-on-quarter.
