According to figures from Gartner, the fourth quarter of 2010 saw worldwide server shipments grow 6.5 per cent year on year, with revenue increasing by 16.4 per cent.

Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice president at Gartner, commented: "2010 was a year that saw pent-up x86-based server demand produce some significant growth on a worldwide level.

"The introduction of new processors from Intel and AMD toward the end of 2009 helped fuel a pretty significant replacement cycle of servers that had been maintained in place during the economic downturn in 2009," he explained.

The North American market performed the best in terms of growth, standing at 24.5 per cent at the end of last year. The Asia-Pacific region recorded growth of 22.4 per cent and Latin America had 12.3 per cent.
