IBM has introduced a new range of servers powered by Intel's Xeon 5500 processors.
The company claims the new devices, which are mountable in server racks and server cabinets, enable customers to roll out virtualised computing more effectively.
IBM states that the new machines will significantly reduces operating costs and provide better performance and simplified server management.
With the new System X servers, IBM believes it has addressed many of the cost-related challenges facing modern data centres, including power consumption, idle processors and under-utilised resources.
Adalio Sanchez, general manager of IBM System X, said: "The world is going through changes that require IT professionals in every industry to consolidate, virtualise and support a variety of different platforms."
He added that as a result there is no one-size-fits-all solution to integrating the plethora of network equipment on offer.
Meanwhile, HP has launched eleven new servers based on Intel's Xeon 5500 processor.
