Hewlett Packard (HP) has decided to support Ubuntu on its ProLiant server hardware.
Ubuntu support will add to the already comprehensive Linux support, which includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Oracle Enterprise Linux.
HP will partner with Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu operating system, to provide full certification of the software on its ProLiant server range.
The range is made up of server rack and server cabinet mountable blade systems as well as stand-alone devices which use the AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon processors.
According to Steven Vaughan-Nichols, "this certification means HP will list Ubuntu as a supported operating system. Both companies are already co-operating at the engineering level to insure that Ubuntu will work flawlessly on the certified servers".
Meanwhile, HP and Orange have penned a deal to distribute mobile internet-ready laptops throughout the companies' European distribution network.
The first raft of devices will be available in the UK, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal and Austria.
