In an article on the Australian website iTnews, major vendors and data centre operators were asked what they thought was the maximum temperature to run a data centre at.
For most of the major vendors, including HP, Dell, Sun/Oracle, Cisco and IBM, a temperature range of between ten C and 35 C was given, as long as the server racks in the data centre are at sea level.
However, according to the American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, the best range is between 18 and 37 C.
As Greg Boorer, managing director of the Canberra Data Centre, points out, adjusting temperatures even slightly can a make a huge difference to costs.
He said: "Every degree you go up makes a huge difference to free air cooling capability and overall efficiency of data centre."
With some data centre operators reported to have let their facilities reach temperatures of up to 60 degrees, there is risk of overheating, with some manufacturer warranties not honoured if this is the case.
Server room monitoring can be one way of keeping control of temperature.
