Extreme Networks has unveiled a hibernating blade server system that will allow data centres to run at a lower temperature.
The new modules for its 8800 data centre chassis switch will allow businesses to install nearly 600 10Gbit Ethernet ports in a single server rack and let them power-down when they are not being used.
Extreme Networks' Black Diamond 8900 modules have a throughput of between 80 and 128Gbit and a single server cabinet rack can house 96 ports using new MRJ21 sockets, which support up to six RJ45 leads each.
Commenting on the green credentials of its network equipment, Extreme Networks' vice-president Paul Hooper said: "Our equipment uses one third the power of Cisco switches and one half the power of Foundry switches."
He claimed that the new system could cut power consumption drastically, saving data centres large amounts of money on their electricity bills.
According to the organisers of the All Energy 2009 conference, networking is a key component of the event, which will deal with renewable energy issues facing businesses in the UK.
