In the third quarter of 2011, Google reduced the amount it spent on data centres - for example on server racks - to $680 million (£430 million).
The company's revenue during this period was up by one-third year-on-year, leaving it just short of $10 billion.
Larry Page, chief executive officer the firm, commented: " Google+ is now open to everyone and we just passed the 40 million user mark. People are flocking into Google+ at an incredible rate and we are just getting started."
In the second quarter of the year, capital expenditure - which may include items such as data cabinets - was down from $917 million in the preceding quarter.
This comes after research firm Gartner forecast that by 2015, global expenditure on data centre hardware is set to exceed $126 million.
It suggested that this year it is expected to reach $98 billion before rising to $106.4 billion next year.
