Cisco and Dell's decision to join forces could greatly simplify data centre infrastructure, it has been claimed.
The new venture by the networking equipment giants will see Dell installing Cisco switches in its blade chassis products which can be mounted in server racks.
It is expected to create a pool of unified network devices that will simplify data centre infrastructure and in turn reduce costs, according to Cisco.
Bob Plankers, a veteran system administrator, told SearchDataCentre.com: "Unified networking is nice, because you can run your storage and data connectivity over the same connection, reducing the number of cables you need."
In related news, Dell has partnered with Xsigo Systems, which specialises in providing input/output virtualisation appliances.
Dell believes the new venture will put it ahead of its rivals, such as Hewlett-Packard and IBM, which do not have input/output virtualisation devices in their portfolios.
