The amount of data storage required by 2011 will be ten times the amount used in 2007 which stood at 281 billion gigabytes it has been claimed.
According to a new study by IDC Research, things like corporate email and electronic documents, which often have to be retained legally, will be the primary cause of the increase in the amount of information stored on servers.
The firm claims that there will be a number of technological innovations in the ensuing period as businesses try and squeeze more storage and performance out of their limited server rack and server cabinet space.
Henk van den Berg, Seagate Technology's director of south Asia sales and marketing, said: "Small and medium businesses have the same concerns as large enterprises to securely store, protect and share their data."
However, he added that smaller firms have less resources available to address concerns over data storage, which is in turn making them look for alternative solutions such as centralisation and managed hosting.
Meanwhile, according to IBM, government storage spend is still growing.
