SMEs failing to back-up servers, study shows

SMEs failing to back-up servers, study showsMany small businesses in the UK are losing data because they are failing to back it up, a new survey reveals.

A study by server appliance company Equiinet found that 40 per cent of attempts to recover data do not succeed in restoring it all.

Despite many companies having experience IT experts, the research also revealed that nearly two thirds of companies are leaving back-up data in the same room as servers.

In the event of an emergency or accident, both would be lost, website vnunet.com reports.

Dave Abbot, product marketing director at Equiinet, said: "Despite a lot of time and effort in undertaking the back-up process, older back-up technologies, such as tapes, have considerable drawbacks.

"Our survey showed that 40 per cent of data recovery attempts fail to restore all the required data."
