Expenditure on server racks and cabinets was always seen as a low priority when compared to spending on actual IT equipment.
However, with the value of equipment housed in cabinets being substantial it is important that firms do everything to safeguard it, it has been claimed.
According to 42U, "Space utilisation, flexibility, and lead time are also important rack talking points".
The firm added: "Installing the maximum practical footprint, in terms of width and depth, provides the most flexibility in the future for ever-changing hardware requirements."
According to Datamonitor's Rhonda Ascierto, more and more firms are turning to virtualisation so they can spread their IT infrastructure across several sites and boost flexibility.
She claimed that the decision by many firms to opt for IT outsourcing was a result of the ongoing global economic downturn, which has caused many IT firms to reign in their spending on equipment such as dedicated servers.
