Mobile phone giant Nokia has said it plans to install new servers and accompanying infrastructure in India for its messaging and email services.
The company wants the servers to be up and running by November this year.
Its move comes amid a dispute between the Indian government and smartphone maker Research in Motion (RIM) over the location of its email and messaging servers.
At present, RIM's servers are situated in Canada, meaning that Indian officials are unable to monitor communications in their country, as data is encrypted. They are therefore pushing for the creation of a server in India.
Nokia has taken early steps to comply with government regulations and avoid a similar dispute that could result in the blocking of its email and messages services.
D. Shivakumar, vice president for Nokia India, confirmed: "Our server for the messenger services will be active in the country by November 5th."
The representative added: "We had met home ministry officials about a month ago. Our services are safe."
