A Swedish data centre design firm has claimed that modular facilities that use easily scalable server racks and modular power units can be cheaper to build and easier to maintain.
Modular Data Centers Stockholm (MDC) is already deploying its modular server solution - a prototype called the M1- at the Kista Science Park, which is near to Stockholm.
The firm hopes that the cutting-edge design will put Sweden at the forefront of the data centre sector.
Jon Karlung, chief executive officer of the firm, told Data Center Knowledge: "We can deploy 100 M1 Modules with 3,500 racks."
He added: "It not only looks cooler than the Facebook server farm, it's more secure and costs half the price."
Mr Karlung concluded that giant server farms that are not constructed on a modular basis were like "dinosaurs".
The UK is already a leading data centre host, with more than 7.6 million square metres of rack space.
