Modular data centres 'are the future' - Data and Server Racks

Modular data centres 'are the future' - Data and Server Racks Changes in the design and structure of server racks could be seen in the future after one expert noted that modularity is the future of data centre design.

Paul Anderson, programme director for infrastructure outsourcing at Capgemini, said that the consultancy wanted modularity for its new data centre "right from the start".

The firm announced last week that it is to launch the world's most energy efficient data centre on September 17th.

Named Merlin, the new facility will be spread over 30,000 square feet and has been built in collaboration with a UK customer.

"We wanted modularity right from the start – for us it tied back into sustainability, reusability and recyclability. They fitted with the concept of using a modular data centre rather than fixing ourselves to another monolithic building," Mr Anderson explained.

"The modules are 100 per cent reusable. The only part within the module that cannot be recycled is the adiabatic cooling panels, at component level."
