The majority of UK consumers believe that companies holding their data online should be responsible for it, according to a new poll.
Only a tiny percentage of the 2,000 UK adults surveyed by ID management firm GB trusted organisations to secure their data.
Just a quarter trust the government, while not even half trust banks, website vnunet.com reports.
Online gambling sites were the least trusted, along with mobile phone companies and travel sites.
Rob Laurence, managing director of GB, said: "Businesses need to tackle identify fraud with the same vigour as they do environmental issues.
He added: "Demonstrating clearly to consumers the attention that is being paid to safeguarding them against identity fraud will go a long way in restoring faith."
