Google data centre utilising free air cooling - Data and Server racks

Google data centre utilising free air cooling - Data and Server racksInternet giant Google has opened a new data centre which has no chillers to support the cooling systems on its data and server racks.

Rich Miller from Data Centre Knowledge claims the new centre in Belgium uses "free cooling", where fresh air from outside is used to support the cooling system when the temperature is cool.

The new system is designed to cut the electricity costs for the data centre, as traditional chillers use a lot of energy.

Google has become one of the first data centres in the world to use to a free air cooling system to keep its data and server racks cool, so free air flows into the area which houses the equipment.

Vijay Gill, senior manager of engineering and architecture at Google, said the firm uses automated tools to manage heat loads throughout the centre.

He added: "You have to have integration with everything right from the chillers down all the way to the CPU."

ZDNet's Heather Clancy has claimed that cabling in a data centre can have an effect on its carbon footprint.
