Global external disk storage revenues 'rise'

Global external disk storage revenues 'rise'The global external disk storage systems factory revenue went up by 9.8 per cent last year, according to new research.

Figures from the IDC Worldwide Disk Storage Systems Quarterly Tracker revealed that the revenue reached $5.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2007.

The total disk storage systems market went up to $7.5 billion – up 7.6 per cent on the previous year, with around 1,645 petabytes shipped.

Brad Nisbet, research manager at IDC, said the strong growth showed that data storage is still a "crucial component" to running an enterprise business.

He added: "Despite the current, global economic uncertainties, the disk storage systems market is benefiting from a wide variety of drivers, ranging from the simple need to store ever-increasing volumes of business data to the more sophisticated objectives around consolidation, virtualization, and ease of management."

The research also revealed that the network disk storage market saw a 15.8 per cent year-on-year rise, going up to $3.9 billion.
