Power and automation technology developer ABB and data centre units provider IO have developed a new data centre module that is powered by direct current (DC).
It is the first product of this sort to be created and the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.
One of the benefits of using DC to power server racks and other equipment is that it reduces power conversion losses and can be between ten and 20 per cent more energy efficient than the AC devices currently in use.
George D Slessman, chief executive of IO, commented: "We can now deliver the entire data centre from the source on DC power, while providing flexibility to deliver alternative current power where and when needed."
The new modular data centres will be portable and easily packaged together and could be deployed faster than traditional facilities.
Roger Schmidt, IBM Fellow and member of the National Academy of Engineering, recently told CIOL that to ensure a data centre is energy efficient it is important to install monitoring systems.
