Social networking giant Facebook is set to open its first data centre outside of the US in Sweden.
The new data centre, which is being established in the town of Luleaa, will be a green facility utilising renewable energy, while its location just 100km south of the Arctic circle will ensure that server racks are kept cool naturally.
The new data centre will serve 800 million Facebook users, with Facebook's director of site operations Tom Furlong stating that its primary aim will be to support European users and help boost the site's performance for them.
Businesses and official in Luelaa are hoping that other companies will follow in Facebook's footsteps and see that its climate and location can make it an ideal data centre location.
"The digital industry will be an important addition to our town," Mayor Karl Petersen told AFP.
He added that the investment will be the single biggest investment in the Swedish city since a steel plant was built in 1940.
