Choosing the right method of aisle containment is essential for an energy efficient data centre, it has been claimed.
In an article for Data Centre Knowledge, air flow management expert Carl Cottuli explained that there are three main types of data centre containment.
Hot aisle containment isolates the hot aisle using end-of-row doors, while the ceiling structure keeps the top of each row enclosed.
Mr Cottuli explained that one of the benefits of this method is that it can be integrated with existing server racks in the row.
Alternatively, businesses can use a free-standing independent containment system, enabling them to add or remove racks from each row easily.
Cold aisle containment works in a similar way, using doors and aisle ceilings to contain individual rows. Again this method can be integrated with existing server racks or with an independent containment system.
"These solutions offer complete control of data centre airflow dynamics at the aisle level, producing increased efficiency and equipment performance while reducing overall energy consumption," Mr Cottuli remarked.
The third method is rack-based chimney containment, whereby a chimney structure is mounted directly to the top rear of the racks, allowing heat to be captured and directed back to the air conditioning units.
"Rack-based heat containment is extremely flexible because it does not require alteration of existing enclosure locations," the expert stated. "Taken altogether this solution is highly compatible with many data centre needs."
