Equinix has announced plans to build its second international business exchange (IBX) data centre in Hong Kong.
HK2 will cost around $63 million (£40.9 million) and will provide enough capacity for more than 1,450 data cabinets.
During the first phase of the project, an initial 450 cabinet equivalents will be made available before the expansion continues, with opening planned for the third quarter of 2011.
The data centre, which will serve the thriving banking and financial sector in Hong Kong, will be directly connected through fibre cables to Equinix's HK1 IBX data centre.
"This connectivity enables prospective customers at HK2 to enjoy close proximity and direct access to the financial ecosystems, including trading venues, buy and sell side firms, market data providers, technology providers and financial networks, at the HK1 IBX data centre," the company explained.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has unveiled plans to invest up to $499 million (£323 million) in a new generation data centre in Virginia in the US.
