Data centre managers are unlikely to focus on making their servers greener, according a new survey.
Research from Gartner shows that while energy management is the top environmental priority for two thirds of respondents, just seven per cent think green procurement is vital in the overall scheme of things.
Rakesh Kumar, research vice-president at the firm, said: "In other words, even if more energy-efficient servers or energy management tools were available, data centre and IT managers are far more interested in internal projects like consolidation, rationalisation and virtualisation."
The study also revealed that two-thirds of managers expect their data centre to face capacity issues over the next year and a half.
A further 15 per cent stated that their data centre was already operating at capacity.
Recently, Iain Stephen, Hewlett-Packard's vice-president of Enterprise Server and StorageWorks for the UK and Ireland, told Computer Weekly that IT budgets are set to remain static next year.
