Many data centres are struggling to combine good environmental credentials within their existing infrastructure, according to one expert.
George Skaff, chief marketing officer at SGI, claims there is growing demand throughout the IT industry to improve the environmental efficiency of data centres.
He claims many firms are struggling to achieve these goals and recommends that "smart hardware decisions" are made to both improve system capacity and reduce the overall environmental impact of the data centre.
Mr Skaff claims air conditioning should be the first issue addresses, as this causes the "greatest cost" for centres.
"Data centre managers must consider the implementation of innovative technology solutions that address these ever-present problems, so that they can ensure maximum capacity and optimum efficiency at minimal financial and environmental cost," says the expert.
Bob Tarzey from Quocirca recently wrote on Silicon.com that data centres can be better for the environment than many people think of co-locations is used mitigate the detrimental effects of in-house server cabinets and server racks filled with older, less efficient network equipment.
